How can you make your move easier? Start by hiring a moving company to do the heavy lifting. After you've found a contractor to work with, take a look at the top tips to simplify your move-in/move-out day.

Create Detailed Labels

Even though the movers are professionals, they can't use their expert knowledge to guess what's inside cardboard boxes or solid plastic bins. Without labels, the movers won't know what boxes contain fragile items or where each container goes in your new home.

When you label boxes and bins:

  1. Write the room name. Where does the box or bin belong in your new home? Clearly label each container with the name of the destination room—especially if it will go into a different room in your new living space or requires storage.
  2. Write the item names. List the contents of the box. Not only will this help the movers, but this strategy will also make it easier for you to unpack.
  3. Write the word fragile for breakable items. Glass, artwork, or other delicate items require special handling. Avoid mid-move mishaps with a clear "fragile" or "handle with care" label.

Along with words, use directional arrows to alert the movers of special handling needs.

Use Color-Coded Boxes

Do you want to go one step above labeling? Even though you still need to write what each box or bin contains, color-coded carriers can add to the overall ease of organization. To use a color-coded container strategy:

  1. Choose one color for each room. Pick a color for each area of your new home. Pack colorful plastic bins or boxes in the coordinating hue. Use matching colored tarps, moving quilts, or bags for larger or awkwardly sized items.
  2. Create an inventory. List each item from each room—with the matching color. The color-coded inventory can help you and the movers to organize everything before, during, and after your move.
  3. Discuss the plan with the moving company. Alert the movers to your color-coded strategy. Review which colors belong to each room.
  4. Write a master list. Even though an inventory can help you to organize the move, you may also need a master list. Use a piece of poster board to create a broad overview of your color scheme. Hang the list near the front door or in a central location.

With clearly labeled boxes and a color-coded inventory of containers, you can make your move easier on everyone involved—from the moving company's staff to your own family.
