Moving is a stressful activity, especially if you're doing it for the first time. The amount of planning and preparation that goes into moving includes finding a house to move in, buying packing supplies, and choosing a moving company. After you have been through all these phases, you should take certain preliminary steps before summoning the moving services.

Do a Walkthrough

You should do a complete walkthrough of the new house when it is empty. Confirm that the previous owner has implemented all the agreed-upon and requested repairs. Additionally, make sure everything that was included in the contract is present. Make sure everything is working properly, including fixtures, switches, and outlets.

If you identify an issue that contravenes the contract, call your realtor to resolve the problem. Looking at the house while it's empty will give you an idea of how to arrange furniture and all your items. It will also help you determine whether everything will fit in the house or if you'll need to hire a self-storage unit for additional stuff. You can take photos of the house and share them with the movers to make accurate plans of how to move in your items.

Schedule a Cleaning

It's essential to clean the new house before moving in. You don't want to move a heavy entertainment system into the living room only to realize that the carpets are full of dust. Even the previous tenant of the house may miss a few spots when cleaning up.

If your new house isn't far from your current one, you can clean the house on your own. However, if you're moving a few miles away, you'll not have the time to clean; therefore, hire a cleaning service. A deep cleaning helps you eliminate issues such as mold, mildew, and pest infestations.

Prepare to Pack

The moving service you hire may not offer packing services. Therefore, you may have to plan how to pack all your belongings. The first step is to gather the required packing supplies. These include boxes, tape, and marker pens. Ensure you choose quality packing boxes and label each box to make it easier to unpack when you arrive at your new home.

Keep the measurements and layout of your new house in mind because it will help you prioritize the items to move and those to give away or store in a self-storage unit. Lastly, ensure you pack one open-first box. This box should contain everything you require to survive during the first 24 hours of your move. Some items to include in this box include a toothbrush, toothpaste, toiletries, cosmetics, beddings, a fresh outfit, snacks, water, and cash. Reach out to movers for more moving tips.
